The BackPack Program serves Oconee County’s most at-risk students, those who may not have food to eat over weekends and school breaks. The food certainly meets the physical needs of a child, but it also provides hope to that child who would not find food at home and peace of mind to a caretaker who would otherwise be unable to feed that child.
The program primarily targets students who qualify for free school meals. The reality is that school breakfast and lunch are likely the most nutritious meals these students eat in a day; and may be their only meals of the day. Many of these students rely on their school’s breakfasts and lunches for their most nutritious meals of the day. The BackPack Program is a way to help these students and their families until students return to school on Monday. Students are identified through a confidential process. Once enrolled, students receive a backpack filled with 6-8 pounds of nutritious, child-friendly food each Friday. Care is taken to make this process as “under the radar” as possible, so that a student’s privacy is protected.
The cost to feed one child a year is $160.00. Donations to the BackPack Program may be at any school or sent to the general EFOC address; please indicate that your donation is for the BackPack Program. Donations are 100% tax-deductible.
