During the month of October, our elementary school counselors, along with a representative from First Light SC, will host discussions with our students on Body Safety. First Light SC is a non-profit agency that operates in Oconee and Anderson Counties and partners with school districts to facilitate student body safety discussions. The focus of this curriculum is to teach students how to identify safe and unsafe touches and teach students how to ask for help if they need it. All of our schools will use the same presentations across our district. We recognize that discussions on body safety are very sensitive, so please do not hesitate to reach out to your school’s administrative team or guidance department if you have any questions or concerns. You can view the presentations at the links below:

Drive Smart is a driving course, taught by the SDOC School Resource Officers, that all students must take prior to driving and parking on one of our campuses. This four-hour course will be taught at each of our three high schools and is designed to help teens gain the knowledge to drive defensively. The Drive Smart driving course will take the place of the requirement for Alive at 25. A student may still take the Alive at 25 course instead of Drive Smart. Cost of the course is $25.00.

Gavin's Law (H.3583) is legislation that makes sexual extortion, the act of blackmailing someone using sexually explicit images or videos, a felony offense and an aggravated felony if the victim is a minor, vulnerable adult, or if the victim suffers bodily injury or death directly related to the crime. In 2022, 17-year-old Gavin Guffey was a victim of sexual extortion, resulting in him taking his own life.
The bill reads in part, "Local school districts shall collaborate with the State Department of Education, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and the Attorney General’s office, as appropriate, to implement a policy to educate and notify students of the provisions of this act which includes adequate notice to students, parents or guardians, the public, and school personnel of the change in law."

As devices play an increasing role in children’s education it is crucial that we put safeguards in place. Your child already benefits from internet filtering technology which blocks inappropriate web content on their school-owned device. This is also mandated by US legislation.
As a district, we have gone one step further by providing each parent/guardian with a free Qustodio Parental App account. Qustodio is a valuable partner that prioritizes privacy, safety and rights of students and parents worldwide. Qustodio will give you important insights into your child’s online activity on their school device. You can use it to review and manage activities on other devices in your home too.
With Qustodio, you are able to:
- Manage your child’s screen time with the ability to pause internet access outside of school hours

(SDE: Alternative Education Programs Options)
The State Department of Education shall create, publish, and provide to all public schools in the State a list of alternative education programs that can award high school degree or high school equivalency credential. The list must include, but not be limited to, the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School and the South Carolina Youth Challenge Academy.
As part of each student's annual review of his Individualized Graduation Plan, school counselors shall distribute information provided by the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School, the South Carolina Youth Challenge Academy, and any other alternative education program to students who are not on track for on-time graduation or who otherwise are at risk of dropping out of school. School counselors shall provide those institutions the names and addresses of all students who are not on track for on-time graduation or who are otherwise at risk of dropping out of school except for students who have opted out of disclosure of directory information under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, 20 U.S.C. Section 1232g. Parents or students age eighteen or older may complete a form to opt the student out of the disclosure of student contact information with these institutions. The department shall develop this opt-out and each district shall make the form available on its website.
